Homestead is an assemblage of various iconic materials found within the Lowcountry. The overall structure is representative of a multi-use barn located near the outskirts of Walterboro, S.C.; it’s a grand and elegant matrix of rafters, timber columns, and rusty corrugated tin. At its height, it housed grain, hogs, cauldrons, and farming tools and served as an appliance repair shop for neighboring businesses. The exposed rafter system comprises a reclaimed picket fence and rusted tin roofing salvaged from a Freedman Cottage. The center concave segment consists of haint-blue tongue-and-groove siding, and the platform is comprised of an inverted picket fence decorated with a series of rebar hooks used to butcher livestock. - Fletcher Williams III
